Media Roundup: Dredmor podcast & Gaslamp interview

Dungeons of Dredmor on Roguelike Radio

The new podcast Roguelike Radio did an entire show about Dungeons of Dredmor, check it out here. (Or on itunes.)

It’s fascinating to listen to people speak very seriously about our game and hear them speculate about what we were thinking when we made this or that design decision (odds are, we weren’t; they’re mostly acts of animal desperation drawn from the lowest id before the conscious mind comes up with a post-hoc justification).

Anyway, we’d be foolish not to be inspired by plunder the thoughts a seasoned pack of roguelike players/designers have about Dredmor — to this point, I’m pretty sure I just heard a great mechanic to act as a foundation for a cheesecrafting skill.

Gaslamp Games interviewed by Gaming Irresponsibly

An extremely patient fellow over at Gaming Irresponsibly has posted interview with us online which we finally got around to fully answering; check it out here.

One wonders if we really ought to say the things we say in public. Then again, we did make Dungeons of Dredmor public and we all know how that turned out. I also have to wonder why Nicholas keeps trying to start a hip-hop style feud with Notch. Have you seen the size of that guy’s posse? Man.

Why are you still reading this? Go read that interview while listening to the podcast.

Patch Status Update; Penny Arcade Expo

A user on Twitter has pointed out that it’s been three weeks since we put up a patch status update. What’s going on, Gaslamp? So here’s the approximate status and time line.

The patch, as it stands, is done. I’m waiting for one piece of art from David, and he assures me that he can paint it tomorrow, but I’m ready to drop it in when he says he’s done it. We’ve spent the weekend testing it internally, and are going to pack it up and send it out for external beta testing on Tuesday. As soon as the external beta testers give it the all-clear, we will fire it your way. There may be a second call for external beta testers next week; I need to get everything sorted out. I would like the beta to take about a week, so that I can put it up next Monday. There will be a content patch thereafter.

Thanks for sticking with us while we get this sorted out. The entire mess has been complicated by my moving, badly, and thus not having a real office until last Wednesday. Nonetheless, David and I are in the same building again, and we have plans to entertain you. I still don’t have internet at the new apartment yet, mainly due to working on this patch, so no doubt I will be in the office a lot until I manage to get that sorted out. 🙂 I need my fix.

In other news, various Gaslampers will be trickling down to Seattle this weekend for the grand and glorious Nerdstravaganza called Penny Arcade Expo. I will be there Saturday and some of Sunday, as I expect to be sorting out patch stuff all next week. Daniel will be wandering around, having a good time, and terrorizing Seattle in his [and Nicholas’s -Ed.] RV, “The Diggle Express.” If anybody would be interested in a Dredmor meet-up, or if anybody would be interested in having a beer with us, feel free to comment on this post and we’ll try to sort out something for Saturday. (As part of our deconstructionist approach to Achievements on Steam, there will be a special Dredmor achievement exposed to those of you who have been drinking with Gaslamp.)

There’s been a lot of other stuff happening in our three weeks of radio silence. There should be new distribution deals announced, including the long-awaited Linux port, in the next few weeks, and we will also be unleashing some sort of Merchandising Effort from the Dwarven Mountainhomes. Watch this space…

Crashes, Cynical Brit, Feature Request FAQ

First: Crashes

There is known crashing due to problems with the SDL sound library or something. Nicholas is chained to his work station with a coffee IV (Foul Liqueur of Yog Sothoth!) and is enjoying the effects of The Motivation Stick. Ye shall receive another patch post-haste.

Cynical Brit / Total Biscuit

… did a lovely video for Dredmor. Check it out:

Wonderful stuff! (By the way, his Blade Being spell kept going to random squares because he targeted a monster directly – if you do that, the spell will get pushed off to a random tile.)

Dredmor rc4 Teaser Shots + RPGWatch Interview

RPGWatch was kind enough to post an interview with me, RPGWatch Feature: Dungeons of Dredmor Interview. (I apologize for the number of quotation marks used; this interview was done in the midst of crunching to completion on Dredmor and I’m afraid that lack of sleep impaired my text formatting judgement.) But please check it out, as I do explain the eyebrow thing once more.

While we’re all waiting I thought I’d make the wait just a little more painful* for our fans out there by taking another pile of screenshots.

[* Waiting pains us too and we try to avoid it whenever possible. Why go slow when you can go fast? This also explains the unfortunate results of few Gaslamp Games Morale Building Nights At The Pub.]

As usual, click on the image to view the full image.

1.  2.

1. Ah, the sweet reek of the dungeon. This is the starting room. You will become very familiar with it. The build I took is tinkerer/crossbow/staff/promethean magic/astrology/blood magic/burglary: A ranged caster/archer who can deal with traps and get in and out of trouble, ideally. Let’s see how this works out.

2. Faffed around a little on level one then went rather too quickly to level two because I was feeling cocky with my strong ranged attacks. These bolas complement my build quite nicely as they will root enemies to the tile they’re on so I can launch bolts or cast Dragon’s Breath at them from afar while dealing asphyxiative damage.

Preview Roundup 2 + Beta Madness-Vortex

Here at Gaslamp we’re in brain-rending beta vortex of madness mode. I’ll try to piece together a couple thoughts at the end of the post, but first a couple more previews:

From Gamer CredentialsDungeons of Dredmor Preview – suddenly diggles, thousands of them!

It’s hard to believe, but just about a week ago Daynab (a Dredmor beta tester) wrote up this quick preview of Dungeons of Dredmor. All I’ll say is that he’s been a big help and Dredmor has come a huge distance in this short time.

And from Paul’s 8bit Patio : Indie Test Drive : Dungeons of Dredmor Beta (Roguelike/RPG)

Paul Soares was good enough to make a video of Dungeons of Dredmor gameplay for his Indie Test Drive series in which he gives a good introduction to the variety of ways to die in the game. Check it out:

And how about a word on Beta and Crunch?

Dredmor IRC channel? You heard it here first…

Somebody has set up a Dredmor IRC channel on #dredmor at FOSSNet. I can’t guarantee we’ll hang out, but we’re kicking it there now.

EDIT: Apparently, there is a Web Chat Thing you can use here: http://webchat.fossnet.info/?channels=#dredmor — enjoy!
